Kung Fu Party - Sake Based Cocktails

Kung Fu Party - Sake Based Cocktails

This past weekend we had a bit of a theme day with some family. The theme was Kung Fu/ Jackie Chan and, since we weren’t taking ourselves too seriously, we cued up Legend of the Drunken Master and Kung Fu Panda.

I’ll be honest, I haven’t seen almost any kung fu movies so I was a bit skeptical about how I would enjoy it but since I’m all about theme parties I was in. Our guests brought with them miniature gluten-free cupcakes that had been done up like pandas (and were ADORABLE) and my better half was preparing Po’s Noodle Soup so naturally cocktails fell to me.

I have very limited experience with sake. I have tried several kinds, both hot and cold but I couldn’t tell you the difference or any brand names. I don’t often make cocktails with vodka and sake falls into that same flavorless category but I figured I couldn’t pass up this opportunity to mix some sake based cocktails. Some of them were hit or miss but I found at least one that was absolutely delightful and perfect for sitting back sipping while watching movies. This one is the Lemon Lime Lychee Fizz!

  • 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 0.5 oz fresh lime juice
  • 4 lychees (from a can)
  • 3 oz lychee juice (from that same can)
  • 1 oz honey syrup
  • 3 oz sake
  • 2 oz brut champagne

In the bottom of your shaker muddle the 4 lychees in the syrup from the can. Once they are sufficiently broken down add your honey syrup, lemon & lime juice, sake and ice and shake well. Strain into a coupe or Collins glass over ice if you prefer some extra chill. Top with 2 ounces of brut champagne (or more, to your preference) and give things a little stir to incorporate. I topped mine with a lime wedge and an additional lychee.
